Languages | International Community School – ICS

“Physiological studies have found that speaking two or more languages is a great asset to the cognitive process. The brains of bilingual people operate differently than single language speakers, and these differences offer several mental benefits.” Anne Merritt

The ICS is committed to helping pupils learn additional languages. We currently offer Arabic, French and Spanish (in Secondary only). Our Modern Foreign Language (MFL) programme allows students to rigorously acquire the skills they need to communicate effectively in the language they learn. The lessons allow students to develop their four skills, listening, speaking, reading and writing to levels which enable them to communicate more confidently, participate fully in class and succeed within the mainstream curriculum.

The delivery of lessons is student centred and staff are encouraged to use a range of different learning strategies to enhance learning and ensure progression such as pair work, role play, group work, peer assessment and formative assessment. Students get ample opportunities to practise their new found language skills in a range of situations both inside the classroom as well as outside eg. during field trips.

Students are grouped according to their ability and they have an average of three lessons per week. The MFL faculty is fortunate to be housed in quality classrooms equipped with internet access, laptops, tablets , interactive whiteboards and projector. The rooms are air conditioned and using heaters in winter and provide spacious working environment including displays of student work which further enhance the learning environment.

We are always hugely impressed with the outstanding progress our students make in a short time.
